Child Dental Exams

Starting before his or her first birthday, regular dental exams and checkup should become part of your child’s healthcare regimen. This is the best time to establish a relationship with your pediatric dental team. A bump to a front tooth is very common, but one you don't have to worry about alone since Dr. Briceno is available to help! Also, these regular dental exams help protect your child's oral health, giving your child's dentist a chance to detect problems early, when they're most treatable, as well as provide oral-care tips and education to you and your child. Dentini Pediatric Dentistry’s convenient locations in the Heights and West U makes bringing your child to the dentist an easy, friendly experience.

During a typical pediatric dental exam, the dentist or hygienist at Dentini will clean your child's teeth and evaluate his or her risk of tooth decay. The examination might include applying a sealant or fluoride to your child’s teeth in order to reduce the risk of decay. Routine dental exam for children might also include dental x-rays or other diagnostic procedures.

To help instill good habits for a lifetime, our dental professionals will likely discuss your child's diet and oral hygiene habits and demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques. Other topics might include preventing oral injuries or, for older children, the oral health risks associated with tobacco, substance abuse, and oral piercings.

Multiple factors including age, health, and risk of tooth decay can help to determine how early and how often your child should visit Dentini Pediatric Dentistry. Keep these general guidelines in mind:

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association recommend scheduling a child's first dental exam after his or her first tooth erupts and no later than his or her first birthday. Your baby's teeth and gums are also likely to be examined during your pediatrician’s well-baby checkups.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling regular dental checkups every six months. However, your child’s dentist might recommend fewer or more frequent visits depending on your child's risk factors for various oral health problems.
